 The Academy Award is the most coveted form of recognition a filmmaker or an actor can dream of getting. The anticipation for the nominations and even the winners begin months before the official release. And every film that wins an Oscar goes down in the history of good films. Here is a list of Academy Award-winning films that you should definitely watch.



Parasite

Directed By – Bong Joon Ho

Year of Release – 21st May 2019

Parasite is a film that made history at the Oscars this year by being the first non-English language film to have won the top awards. It took home most Oscars by winning four awards for Best Picture, Directing, International Feature Film, and Writing (Original Screenplay).

12 Years A Slave

Directed By – Steve McQueen

Starring – Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Brad Pitt

Year of Release – 30th August, 2013

This biographical period drama film is an adaptation of an 1853 memoir by Solomon Northup of the same name. The story is about an African American who was kidnapped and then sold into slavery.

The film received nine Academy and won three for Best Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress.

Moonlight

Directed By – Barry Jenkins

Starring – Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland, Janelle Monae and Ashton Sanders

Year of Release – 2nd September 2016

Moonlight’s win at the Oscars is again a historical win as it was the film with an all-black star cast to have won a major Academy Award.

The film received a total of eight Academy nominations and won three for  Best Picture, along with Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Godfather

Directed By – Francis Ford Coppola

Starring – Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Richard Castellano

Year of Release – 14th March 1972

This classic American crime film is one of the most acclaimed films of all time. The film is power-packed with extraordinary acting and captivating screenplay which the movie buffs have still not been able to refuse even after all these years. It won three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Schindler’s List

Directed By – Steven Spielberg

Starring – Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes and Caroline Goodall

Year of Release – 30th November 1993

The film is based on the real-life of the industrialist Oskar Schindler who rescued more than thousand Polish-Jews from being sent to Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp.

The film was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

Casablanca

Directed By – Michael Curtiz

Starring – Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, and Claude Rains

Year of Release – 26th November 1942

Casablanca is another classic, set in the time of the Second World War. It is a romantic drama film about an American expatriate, Rick Blaine and his conflicting love affair.

The film is considered to be one of the best films ever made and has won three Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Lord of the Rings: Return Of The King

Directed By – Peter Jackson

Starring – Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom and Cate Blanchett

Year of Release – 18th December 2003

This epic fantasy adventure film remains to be one of the most favorite fantasy fictions. It is also considered as one of the most influential films ever made.

The Lord of the Rings: Return Of The King created history at the 76th Academy Awards for winning all eleven awards that it had been nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Film Editing.
