Review of the Film-“Zack Snyder’s Justice League”

 If we put the film in juxtaposition with the critically battered 2017 film, then it is definitely several folds notched up. However, if we put things in the neutral perspective, then four hours is a slight drag as far as fan service is concerned. Regardless of that, several critics believe that context is the key if we want to dissect Zack Snyder’s version of the Justice League, and some of the facets that left us clueless in the 2017 film make some sense now.

It cannot be denied that “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” does have its artistic flaws and does look out of sorts sometimes, yet the moment you put this 4-hour long tedious (and I am not saying this lightly) journey into the context of preceding DCEU films, every parsed element of the film plays its syntactic part. With his sincere effort, Zack Snyder had tried to put the impetus on the fact that despite the flaws and extremely deep controversies, DCEU deserved a chance.

In short words, Zack Snyder is definitely a better artist than Joss Whedon. And, obviously, it was his vision from the very beginning.

It doesn’t take a Ph.D. to realize that it is a unique moment in pop culture where fans rallied together to bring back a director who had left the film because of the tragic death of his daughter. For him, the decision to return to conclude what he had started was not only a professional nightmare amidst the controversies surrounding the whole franchise, but it was also a profound personal decision.

Nevertheless, it is imperative to point out that DCEU’s kaleidoscopic method of world-building and character development is still jejune and insipid if we are speaking in terms of MCU proportions. The actors certainly haven’t delivered performances of their lives, which is understandable, the subplots really needed a second thought, and somewhere deep down, all the cast and crew have shown desire to compete with Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it has to be one of the most significant flaws of the film. Just glance at the previous successful films of DC, and you would know what I am talking about. Joker, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam. While MCU is, in itself, a roller coaster ride, the DC Extended Universe thrives in its uniqueness.

Now, one must also point out the fact that, unlike the 2017 version, Zack Snyder’s film is logically consistent and coheres with all the foreshadowing. The film is coruscating with sporadic intriguing plot elements that have Snyder’s stamp of approval marked all over it. The dark theme, the exaltation of Superman, familiar visual conceits, and Darkseid’s persona lurking in the backdrop make the film at least a one-time watch, if not anything. 

Like all superhero films, the fight sequences look ostensible and have been pushed towards a wall of facile, shallow, and inept vanity. Zack Snyder played all his cards, and the movie alluded to the fact that he reached his breaking point in making the wheel move; however, there was something wrong and something missing with the whole fabric of it.

The changes from the 2017 film are visible. The scenes do not look rushed, and the editing looks professional; the shunned-out actor Ray Fisher takes center stage with his Cyborg character, the CGI looks properly used (to say the least), and most importantly, it looks like there was a plan in place. Zack Snyder knew what he was doing.

“Zack Snyder’s Justice League ” does not pretend to be anything more than it really is. A comic book story in its culmination of fan service. Fans got what they wanted for the months of labor they put in for the “ReleaseTheSnyderCut” movement, and it is improbable they would be disappointed with what they have seen.

Snyder cleverly sneaked in the anti-life equation to add another layer to the storytelling, but he desperately lacked what many critics think was the primary absence in the whole action flick. An intriguing villain.

Steppenwolf was all-powerful and tried extravagantly hard to turn all of humanity into zombie slaves but looked imbecile and lackluster. It was almost as if, amidst the controversies and passion for reviving the Justice League, everyone forgot about Steppenwolf in his entirety.

In precis, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a celebration of familiar superheroes, a revival of the good old franchise with blowing trumpets, and a friendly reminder that nobody really dies in a superhero film. It is a cathartic feeling that comes after years of fights and turbulence. It is a sign that things are falling into place. It is a unique moment in pop culture, whether you like it or not, and has been tailor-made for millennials, for whom customization is a part of their lives: you either care, or you walk away.

And as far as DC fans are concerned, it is what it is. A befitting climax to a long story or perhaps, a promise for a suitable future.

Netflix Releases The Trailer of Chadwick Boseman’s Final Film

 Netflix has unveiled the trailer of Chadwick Boseman’s final film “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” also starring Viola Davis. The film boasting about its black talent is based on a play penned by August Wilson.

By the looks of the trailer, we can expect the late actor’s final film to be mind-blowing. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is a Netflix film based on a play penned by August Wilson in which Viola Davis will star as Ma Rainey, the iconic American singer from the 1920s.

Some iconic names have been involved in the behind the scenes work that include “Equalizer” star Denzel Washington as the producer. He will be working alongside Todd Black, and the stunning camera work has been done by George C. Wolfe.

The stunning all-black ensemble includes Academy Award winner Viola Davis in the titular role supported by Chadwick Boseman, Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Dusan Brown, and Taylour Paige.

The official synopsis released by Netflix gives us an idea of what the film is going to be about. According to the synopsis, we will be taken back to the 1920s to a moment when the sensational singer Ma Rainey engages in a heated debate with a white producer regarding the creative control over her songs while her band awaits her arrival. Then, a talented drummer (played by Boseman) who has a liking for her daughter and desires to have a claim in the music industry stimulates a revelation of some moving stories that will change the dimension of the drummer and his friends’ lives forever.

August Wilson is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, and his play “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” celebrated the courage and tenacity of the black artists who refused to bog down against the societal prejudice which was persistent in dictating their value.

The script for the screen adaptation has been penned by Ruben Santiago-Hudson.

If you have ever got a chance to see the trailer, you would know that Davis is almost unrecognizable in the avatar of Ma Rainey, and we almost feel like we are seeing the iconic singer herself. A report suggests that the role was not easy for her as she had to use an awful lot of vocal chops apart from truly transforming herself into that role, which also took an everyday effort. 

Fans will definitely feel cathartic tears of joy when they get to see their beloved Black Panther for the last time in a film.

Since there is sentimental support towards the film and the fact that the Black Lives Matter movement has dominated the socio-political atmosphere of the United States, you might argue that “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” has a very good chance of sweeping Oscars next year.

HBO Max Original Comedy-Drama Film An American Pickle is a Funny One-Time Watch

 The coronavirus pandemic forced cinema owners to pull the shutters down to ensure the safety of their patrons. The temporary closure of theatres has sent cinephiles in the direction of online video streaming platforms. Online platforms such as HBO Max, Disney+, Netflix, and Amazon Prime are now the go-to places for brand new shows and movies.

To treat its viewers during dire times, HBO Max has released an original film on its platform. Titled An American Pickle, it is a comedy-drama film starring popular comic actor Seth Rogen. The movie is based on a short story called Sell Out. Even though HBO Max has a great list of content to choose from, the comedy film is a stellar addition to the platform’s list of originals.

Preserved in a Vat of Pickle for 100 Years

An American Pickle revolves around the story of Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen), a Jewish immigrant who works in a pickle factory. In 1919, Herschel fell into a vat of pickles as the factory shut down. He is then preserved for 100 years.

Seth Rogen’s character wakes up in the year 2019 in Brooklyn. He realizes that the only living relative is his grandson Ben (Seth Rogen). Rogen’s second character of the film is a modern-day app developer. In the movie, Ben is seen developing an application titled Boop Bop, which checks a company’s ethics while buying their products.

Herschel meets up with Ben and goes to the cemetery to visit the graves of his wife and child. Upon seeing the place in shambles and a vodka billboard hanging around, the “old” man attacks a few workers. This event results in his and Ben’s arrest. The criminal record makes it difficult for Ben to find investors.

Herschel goes on to set up a pickle business, but Ben tells the health inspectors that his great-grandad is using ingredients found in trash cans. Ben tells Herschel to download twitter, and this eventually leads the immigrant to become an icon of free speech.  This brief synopsis of the story showcases the difference in personalities of both the characters even though they are related.

An American Pickle: A Tried and Tested Comedy Formula

An American Pickle scrapes through the tried and tested formula of a comedy movie. This is quite evident when the story brings two entirely different (personality) people together and showcases a laughter riot throughout the film. It is quite apparent that Rogen’s character of the 20th century is struggling to wrap his mind around the ever-changing technology, whereas Ben does not seem to have a problem at all.

The Brandon Trost directorial follows a predictable storyline, but if you want to enjoy a few laughs, Herschel’s incorrect political viewpoints or his incapability to understand modern technology have the perfect comical timings during the film.

A Predictable Storyline

The story runs thin after a while mainly because it is predictable, and the director is trying to stretch a short story into a feature-length film. The central conflict in the movie is that even when Ben’s great-grandfather is trying to grow his pickle business in modern America, he does not care and attempts to undermine Herschel. An American Pickle sees Seth Rogen perform clean comedy instead of his R-rated jokes in most of his films. Overall, this comedy-drama film is an entertaining watch with a predictable storyline. But if you are a fan of Seth Rogen and his jokes, this HBO Max original will turn your Friday night into a laughter riot.
