How to Record Sound on Windows 10 Using Voice Recorder App

Voice Recorder App is a convenient option for recording any kind of a sound on Windows 10. There are other third-party applications as well that you can use to record sound on Windows 10, but the voice recorder app has all the necessary tools and features that one requires.

Not only the ordinary external sounds, but you can also record conversations using the application. Let us get started with a guide on how to use the voice recorder app.

How to install a Voice Recorder app in Windows 10?

Voice Recorder app is a default application in Windows 10, but if in case, you don’t have it installed, the steps to install the application are as follows:

  1. Go to the ‘Microsoft Store’ on your PC.
  2. Tap on the ‘Get’ button and a dialog box will appear.
  3. Tap on the ‘Open’ button on the pop-up menu.
  4. Next, click on the ‘Get’ button next to the app.
  5. The app will start installing on your PC.

Once the voice recorder app gets installed, you can start working with it.

How to operate the Voice Recorder app in Windows 10?

To record sound in your Windows 10, all you need is a microphone. It can be the in-built microphone or an external device in case the in-built microphone is damaged.

Recording sound

The steps to record sound with the sound recorder are:

  1. Search for the ‘Voice Recorder’ app from the search bar.
  2. Click on the application to open.
  3. Tap on the ‘Record’ button indicated by a ‘Mic’ icon to start recording.
  4. You can use a ‘Flag’ to mark on your recording. It doesn’t affect anything while you record a sound, but it works well while editing the sound.
  5. You can use the ‘Pause’ button to stop in between and resume whenever you’re ready.
  6. Click on the ‘Stop’ button to end the sound recording.

Once you’ve recorded a sound, the audio gets saved in .m4a file format. To access your recordings, you can visit the ‘Sound Recordings’ folder.

Playing Sound

The steps to play previously saved recordings are:

  1. Search for the ‘Voice Recorder’ app from the search bar.
  2. Click on the application to open.
  3. The left toolbar appears with all the previously recorded sounds. Click on any of the recordings to select.
  4. Next, click the ‘Play’ button to listen to the recording.

You can choose to listen to any other recording by following the same.

Trimming Sound

The steps to trim a track are:

  1. Search for the ‘Voice Recorder’ app from the search bar.
  2. Click on the application to open.
  3. Select the recording you want to trim and click on the ‘Trim’ button on the lower right side of the screen.
  4. Once you make the changes, click on the ‘Save’ button on the bottom of the screen to save the recording.
  5. You can choose to save a copy or replace the old recording with the new track.

Renaming audio file

  1. Search for the ‘Voice Recorder’ app from the search bar.
  2. Click on the application to open.
  3. Select the recording you want to rename from the left toolbar and click on the ‘Rename’ option on the bottom of the window.
  4. Assign a name for the recording, and tap on the ‘Rename’ button to save the changes.

Sharing audio file

  1. Search for the ‘Voice Recorder’ app from the search bar.
  2. Click on the application to open.
  3. Select the recording you want to share from the left toolbar and click on the ‘Share’ option on the bottom of the window.
  4. A pop-up window will appear with the applications via which you can share the file. Select and click on the application and follow the upcoming instructions on the screen to share the audio file.

Note: You can copy the audio files to other folders as well, by using the copy-paste option.


How to troubleshoot and fix Voice Recorder issues in Windows 10?

To troubleshoot and fix the issues created by your voice recorder, that probably occurs with the microphone or privacy settings, the guide is as follows:

Fixing access to the microphone

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your system.
  2. Select the ‘Privacy’ menu from the list.
  3. Click on the ‘Microphone’ option from the left toolbar.
  4. Tap on the ‘Change’ button for ‘Microphone access for this device.’
  5. Turn the slider on for ‘Microphone access for this device’ if it’s turned off.
  6. Also, make sure to turn on the slider for ‘Allow apps to access your microphone.’
  7. You can choose to give access to specific applications or all of them.

Fixing microphone issues

  1. Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your system.
  2. Select the ‘System’ menu from the list.
  3. Click on the ‘Sound’ option from the left toolbar.
  4. Click on the ‘Troubleshoot’ button under the ‘Input’ section of the window.
  5. Follow the upcoming instructions on the screen to troubleshoot and fix the sound errors.

Note: Make sure that your microphone is connected properly if you’re using an external device. In case, you’re using Bluetooth headphones, recheck the connectivity under ‘Bluetooth and Other Devices’ settings.
