Everything to Know About Dark: Season 3

Netflix seems to have mastered its Originals and while many consider re-watching classics, like Friends, over and over again, many have come to like Netflix for their original content. One of the most popular sci-fi thriller series which took the internet by storm was ‘Dark’. Getting rave reviews for its storyline, visuals, and character design, the series has gone on to release their third and final instalment for the show.

To give a background of the series, Dark is set in the town of Winden, Germany where the disappearance of a child opens up the secrets of the town’s mysteries. Four of the families in the village realize that they are tied with the oddities of time-travel that covers their four generations. Going as far back as 1953, the series also dives into the future which is set to be in the year 2053. In the first season, the characters of the show find a wormhole in the caves under a nuclear power plant. This leads to the four families, namely Kahnwald, Neilsen, Doppler, and Tiedemann, being involved in the disappearances of the children of the village.

While the second season showed many characters trying to revive their loved ones through the past, new timelines, and consequently new storylines emerged. The eventual destruction of Winden is revealed by the mysterious Sic Mundus group which claims to kill families of the village. All of these complex narratives are filled with mystery, drama, love, and thrill that goes far beyond the viewers had anticipated.

The show finally comes to an end with season three which is believed to be one of the best endings in the Netflix-era. Many of the confusions initiated in the first season are put out in the clear and while many characters face the light of the viewers, Jonas is tasked with the biggest challenge of driving the series while also giving space for the viewers to breathe and come to conclusions on their own. We leave season two with the reveal of Martha’s alternate self that confirms the existence of alternate universes. Not only the characters make use of time travel, but the existence of parallel universes also adds another ‘dimension’ to the already jumbled storyline. However, the series’ creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese make it easy for the viewers to digest the series without making them feel overwhelmed. One of the ways that they achieve this is through the brilliant transition of time travel from one year to another without mentioning the years in captions. This is achieved with brilliant cinematography and the screenplay that maintains pace throughout the episodes.

The season progresses with more clarity into the latter half as all the characters explore their own stories and while the progression continues to cause ripples into the present as well as the future, the complex network of ties that bind the entire set of characters together ultimately prove to be the entire show’s strongest selling points. None of the current Netflix Originals have come close to delivering a perfect run for the show that satisfies a viewer. Many times the shows don’t allow enough time for a viewer, with the case of Tiger King, and other times they tend to be too stretched out which dilutes the interest, as with the case of 13 Reasons Why. Dark finds the perfect spot between the two and feels comfortably normal to end a series even if it means a measly three seasons. To continue with the review without spoiling, the finale to the series seems well deserved and utterly satisfactory, unlike many shows that end in a rough turmoil. Even if the show goes through countless trips in the past, present, and the future, the series deserves a must-watch for anyone who likes crisp stories, some mind-juggling, and an admirable cast of characters that simply excels in grabbing the viewer till the end. The final season leaves no stones unturned and joins all the dots
