Benicio del Toro Doesn’t Need Any Scripted Dialogue

Benicio threw away the dialogue pages during the filming of the 2015 film Sicario. He believes that he does not need anyone to tell him what the dialogues are since his facial expressions will work with anything he says.

Benicio del Toro earned massive praise when he impersonated the hitman character for the 2015 film “Sicario” also starring Avengers antagonist Josh Brolin and Edge of Tomorrow actress Emily Blunt. Toro’s intense acting skills moved the story forward in its final sequences; the suspenseful music and Toro’s breathtaking scowls remained a talking point of the film after the credits had rolled.

He played the character named Alejandro, a man who desires to avenge the death of his family. He had very few words to say during the entire film, and that perhaps is one of the reasons he thought that memorizing dialogues is redundant.  Alejandro was a man of long and deathly gazes.

Recently when Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan sat down with Roger Deakins and James Deakins on “Team Deakins” podcast, they started talking about Denis Villeneuve’s work as they both shared working history with him.

Paul Dano played a crucial role in the mystery film “Prisoners”, and Roger Deakins had been a cinematographer for Villeneuve in three of his critically acclaimed films “Sicario”, “Prisoners” and “Blade Runner 2049.”

Dano revealed that part of the reason he decided to sign for Prisoners was Roger Deakins himself. His name attached as a cinematographer convinced Dano that he is indeed signing for something great.

It was when they started talking about Benicio del Toro then Deakins revealed that there were times on the sets of Sicario when the actor would simply walk up to Denis Villeneuve and tell him that he doesn’t need any dialogues and that whatever Denis wants of him he can do it with his face. Although Deakins was surprised because it was the first time, he was seeing a lead actor talk like that, but he was ultimately impressed by how much acting Del Toro could deliver with his body.

Roger Deakins also expounded that the whole structure of the film Sicario was a lot different than many films because the story relied heavily on the camera movements, sequences and the suspense than on any character depth. The film Sicario barely spoke anything about the characters; it was a story that was just tailor-made for the purpose of filmography.

Paul Dano also gave insights on Benicio Del Toro’s abilities as an actor with whom he has worked on a showtime series titled “Escape at Dannemora.” Dano said that it was amazing to witness Del Toro’s instincts as an actor, something he hasn’t “seen before.” Dano revealed he is a kind of an actor who likes doing takes until the time he just nails the scene but Del Toro’s trust in the scene, in his eyes, and in the person holding the camera mesmerized him.

Roger Deakins is a veteran cinematographer and has won two Academy Awards for his work in Blade Runner 2049 and recently released war film 1917. His other collaborative works include 1994 film Shawshank Redemption, No Country for Old Man, In Time, Fargo, etc.

Benicio Del Toro is a verified mainstream actor who has been credited with a lot of mainstream films. He won an academy award for his work in Steven Soderbergh film Traffic. His other films include The Usual Suspects, Star Wars: Last Jedi, MCU films, A Perfect Day, etc.

Paul Dano also has earned several accolades and award nomination for his works in the films such as 12 Years a Slave, Little Miss Sunshine, Prisoners, Love & Mercy and his debut film L.I.E. DC studios have also hyped him as the next villain for the caped crusader in the upcoming film “The Batman” directed by Matt Reeves. Dano will be playing the role of The Riddler, which has been presumed to be the main of the plot.
