Mike Flanagan Wants To Adapt ‘The Dark Tower’

Mike Flanagan is planning to work on another Stephen King’s epic novel. Stephen King is the ‘King’ of horror. He is an American author known for his work in horror, suspense, supernatural fiction, crime, fantasy novels, and science fiction genre. Many filmmakers and writers attempted to adapt King’s novels, but not all of them succeeded. One such epic is The Dark Tower.  Only a few directors and writers could do justice to the King’s stories, and one of the top names among them is Mike Flanagan.

Mike Flanagan is an American director known for his movies of the horror genre, including Oculus in 2013, Absentia in 2011, Hush in 2016, Before I Wake in 2016, Ouija: Origin of Evil in 2016, Gerald’s Game in 2017, and Doctor Sleep in 2019. The last two in the list, Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep were the adaptation of King’s novels. In his recent interview, Flanagan confirmed that he would take a crack at The Dark Tower. Flanagan has directed, produced, created, wrote, and edited the supernatural series on Netflix The Haunting Of Hill House in 2018. The series was based on a novel of the same name written by Shirley Jackson. His upcoming shows will be the sequel of Hill House titles The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on Henry James’ novel The Turn of the Screw.

During the interview in a virtual conversation for Fantasia Fest 2020, Flanagan was asked if there is any dream project he would love to work on. He answered “The Dark Tower”, he said he got the answer that many Stephen King fans would have. The Dark Tower is the story he wishes he could tell. Many talented people poured their hearts and souls to adapt the story, so that would be one for them. He does not know if that could happen, but he feels it is daunting.

Hollywood has always been trying to adapt King’s epic eight-book series. Damon Lindelof and J.J.Abrams were trying to crack. Then the project was taken over by Ron Howard. He recommended Javier Bardem to play the lead character of the movie, Roland Deschain. Howard planned to create a trilogy of miniseries to fill the backstory, but the budget was a problem, and hence he had to cancel the project. He later made a movie adapting the story starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba with a different director, but the film came and went.

Flanagan is currently working on an original horror series for Netflix, Midnight Mass. He will direct, write, and serve as executive producer of seven episodic series. The show was scheduled to start the production work in March 2020 and was temporarily shut down due to a coronavirus pandemic. The production began on 17 August 2020 and tied up with Vancouver. Flanagan has proved that he is capable of creating something new and also an adapting version. If anyone can do justice and make The Dark Tower beautiful is only Mike.
